There are three versions of this movie, and it’s very interesting to watch and compare them all. They are based on a novel in 1900 by the French writer Mirbeau. Bunuel‘s version of the movie is the best, probably even better than the novel. Jean Renoir made a fluffy 1946 Chambermaid that is way more upbeat and “clean” than the others. It was made in English in the US by Renoir after fleeing Europe during WWII. The newer film with Lea Seydoux is more true to the story in many regards. But Bunuel’s is best. For in depth discussion of the novel and Renoir’s and Bunuel’s films see http://www.thepinksmoke.com/diaryofachambermaid.htm
