Add a CommentThe story of a short street in the shadow of a football stadium coming to terms with & healing their community after a series of murders. It is compellingly told in the actual words of those interviewed in the aftermath of the crimes... it's not a "crime drama" but a fuller story of the neighbors, teenagers, community leaders, prostitutes and johns all with lives that need to keep on living. This wasn't a "musical" so much as a dramatic documentary using music & choreography to bring focus & add depth to the dialogue. (What one commenter called repetitive, I'd say was emphasis). No show tunes here. Most of the actors were in the original stage production, and it does sometimes have the feel of watching a play. I thought it excellent & am very glad to have checked it out - regardless the many negative comments.
The premise is good, but they could have done this in 20 min. They repeat everything, repeat everything.... Way too much.
A murder musical???? Ridiculous to me!! Do not bother!! Kristi & Abby Tabby
thought it would be a great movie!!!! then they started singing, what a bore !!!!!!!!! horrible singing by great actors to bad , very sad
Not out-of-place in Vancouver Downtown Eastside, about 5 murdered prostitutes in a low-rent road, yet it's not about the murderer or the murders, but about how a community gets together and heals itself. ALL dialogues/lyrics taken verbatim from the locals; actors did a very effective sing-song of the lyrics like Rex Harrison in My Fair Lady. Especially effective are the media Greek chorus. Film starts with dark blue/grey palette and explodes into a riot of colours near the end.
If you like musical theater, this one's for you.
Not for me...the singing, speaking format was too strange. Fast forwarded 15 mins and stopped after that.
After a series of murdered prostitutes ended up being found in a neighborhood in Ipswich, the neighbors of the area were interviewed and asked to give their thoughts on what had happened. The film is a musical docudrama of the exact words the interviewees gave, set to a semi-musical theme. Kind of bizarre, and horrifying, but not in the ways you would expect. it's the "innocent" neighbors who see themselves as the victims here, but in interviews, their true colors come through to expose prejudice and ugliness from even those you would have least expected it. All in all, an interesting film with a deep message. Surprised that I would be defending this, as I generally always despise musicals, but this one is different. For sure, it's an off the wall kind of film, so be forewarned of that, but worth it, in my opinion.
We watched only the first 10 minutes. Got fed up with the weird 'documentary' style. Who knows, maybe it gets better.
True Crime plus true testimony makes this a musical like no other.
It is a musical not a murder mystery!!? Still, I watched it till the end. I don't mind musicals but I didn't expect this movie to be one (judging by the cover it looked like a drama).
