As the United States raced against the Soviet Union to put a man in space during the 1950s and 1960s, NASA tapped the talent of a group of African-American women to serve as the brains behind this major operation. The brilliance of these mathematicians, and their ability to dream big, situates Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, and Katherine Johnson, and the other math whizzes of this project firmly in the pantheon of heroes of U.S. history.

You can't keep a good woman down. Cream will rise to the top.

First of all, I have to say that it bothers me that is has become normal for films based on true stories to alter the actual events significantly. Three people who were both black and female in the 1950s were nevertheless able to rise to important and influential positions within the nation’s most prestigious scientific and technical organization, and it seems to me that this should surely be enough accomplishment and drama to support any movie. Instead, Hidden Figures concentrates events into a shorter period, and makes some aspects of the actual events more contentious than they actually were, so that it ends up being a somewhat familiar feel-good story about condemning racism rather than the true story of three remarkable individuals. That being said, Hidden Figures does what it sets out to do, and *is* a feel-good story about overcoming racism, enhanced by charismatic actors in the leading roles. It’s quite a good movie and I liked it, and my reservation is merely that it could have been even better.

Good movie made you realize what black women went thru trying to better themselves.

Nasa employed a large number of female mathematicians as "human computers". Many were African-Americans.

Their work processing data and performing complicated calculations was critical to the success of the space programme.

Must watch at least once ... at least. As with all books turned to movie and since this is not a documentary, don't write your space science report off details in this movie. The script effectively portrays a dark attitude ... lightly ... but with enough effect to make the point without making the movie a downer. I trust the actresses/actors had more fun portraying the script too. Do take away the benefits of treating everyone based on their skills, talents & personality; not the color of their skin, sex or type of last name. This applies to all ethnicity including caucasian heritages. Yes, supression of minorities happens ALL OVER THE WORLD. Time to move forward & embrace everyone's gifts equally. Gene Roddenberry was way ahead of his time when he wrote of a United Federation. Awesome author.

If you are out-smarted by a minority, team up & combine your brains - two heads are ALWAYS better than one.

I was actually kind of disappointed here.

At a glance, this is a great movie that highlights a forgotten story that deserves a lot more attention than it's gotten. The cast performs admirably and the movie does a decent job of making early-NASA's behind-the-scenes digestible for the casual viewer.

As an adaptation of a book however, this movie is overly saccharine and fails to accurately portray how things truly existed at NACA and NASA. Further it grossly oversimplifies the people involved; the degree to which racism and sexism effected the women involved comes across significantly less in the book. Miss Jackson asserts that there were a lot of decent people at NACA and NASA, and while there was tension, a lot of that was overshadowed by the mission at hand. The movie adds scenes that fundamentally alter the mood and attitude of the people involved, and I feel that this is detrimental to the overall story, and a classic case of Hollywood adding drama for the sake of drama (and money).

This is also not to mention the fact that Mary Jackson herself had been there for about a decade as a supervisor before the space race properly began. Virtually everyone involved realized there were bigger issues at stake, like the Cold War, national pride, economics, and the need to fill positions with qualified people. You get the tiniest taste of this, but frankly, the movie portrays it in a very unsatisfactory way.

If you liked the movie, I'm glad. I hope you will pick up the book and realize how much more to the story there is, because I do not feel like the movie went far enough in accurately telling the story as Margot Lee put it down.

Rated 10/10. An amazing story which I enjoyed watching. Excellent acting.

It was good to see these women get the recognition which they deserved.

the real ladies were thinner and lighter than the 'Hollywood' choices, but you can see why they did it, to inspire black kids in the future. in reality, there were ladies of ALL races working behind the scenes at NASA.

"Here at NASA we all pee the same color", a priceless quote!

Many excellent quotes in IMDb and of course from its book at goodreads .... this classic gem appeared in the film but not in the book:

Despite what you may think, I have nothing against y'all.
- I know, I know you probably believe that.
