Nobody knows what happened to Sarah Cook. The beautiful blonde teenager disappeared fifteen years ago, the same night her parents were brutally murdered in their suburban Ohio home. Her boyfriend Brad Stockton--black and from the wrong side of the tracks--was convicted of the murders and is now on death row. Though he's maintained his innocence all along, the clock is running out. His execution is only weeks away when his devoted sister insists she spied Sarah at an area gas station. Willing to try anything, she hires PI Roxane Weary to look at the case and see if she can locate Sarah.

Brad might be in a bad way, but private investigator Roxane Weary isn't doing so hot herself. Still reeling from the recent death of her cop father in the line of duty, her main way of dealing with her grief has been working as little and drinking as much as possible. But Roxane finds herself drawn in to the story of Sarah's vanishing act, especially when she links the disappearance to one of her father's unsolved murder cases involving another teen girl.

The stakes get higher as Roxane discovers that the two girls may not be the only beautiful blonde teenagers who've turned up missing or dead. As her investigation gets darker and darker, Roxane will have to risk everything to find the truth. Lives depend on her cracking this case--hers included.

The only reason I didn't give this title a full five stars is that I figured out the culprit about 2/3 of the way through. Not that it was a bad thing, I was actually just more annoyed that Roxane hadn't even considered this angle. For as smart and dedicated as her character is, I was surprised she didn't get to this conclusion as soon as I did. But this book was very well written and all of the characters were likeable and fit into the story well. I look forward to reading more from this new series. Finished reading 1/2/18.

The first book in a new private detective series. Roxane Weary is an edgy, flawed Private Detective who never gives up. Look forward to more in the series.

With a wonderfully flawed main character and a full cast of interesting players I was impressed by this new author. A great beginning to a new mystery series.

Especially for a debut author, this mystery was exceptionally well-paced and well-written . Reminiscent of Sarah Paretsky's P.I., V.I. Warshawski. As in The Girl On a Train and In a Dark, Dark Wood, alcohol abuse contributes to the heroine's vulnerability and the story's suspense. Bisexuality in a main character lends an interesting dimension. Looking forward to more by this author.

Need a can't-put-down mystery thriller? Like your private investigators edgy and with a taste for whiskey? Wishing we could see more gender equality in this genre? Meet Roxane Weary. I can't wait for more of her!

This book was SO good. Roxane Weary is a private detective. Her father was a police officer killed in the line of duty. They had issues that were obviously unresolved. Roxane gets a case of a missing woman gone for a decade. The woman's parents were killed in a double homicide on the night she went missing and her boyfriend is on death row convicted of the murders.

Roxane clearly has an issue with alcohol but an uncanny instinct when it comes to finding things. She's bisexual and has a few different relationships and problems in each. I absolutely have to read another book starring her. This book sucked me right in. I didn't want any distractions including sleep. Roxane is the kind of woman that doesn't give up once she cares. I totally relate to being like that. Her relationship with her brother Andrew reminded me of my brothers and I.

I'm hoping I get to come along on Roxanes next case and glimpse more of her complicated life. Kristen Lepionka has a winner with this main character.
