Harry Benson, a man who suffers from violent seizures, is implanted with electrodes that are designed to send soothing pulses to the pleasure centers of his brain, but something goes wrong with the operation and Benson sets out to get revenge.
Harry Benson suffers from violent seizures. So much so that he requires a police guard when entering a Los Angeles hospital for treatment. Dr. Roger McPherson, head of the prestigious Neuropsychiatric Research Unit, is convinced he can cure Benson through a procedure known as stage three. During this highly specialized surgery, electrodes are placed deep in Benson's brain, sending monitored soothing pulses to its pleasure canyons. The operation is a success-until Benson discovers how to get the pulses with increasing frequency. He escapes from the hospital, a homicidal maniac with a deadly agenda. A computer specialist who suffers from violent seizures has electrodes implanted in his brain to soothe his impulses and he soon learns to program the implants himself.

It was an entertaining read, but it falls short to other of Crichton novels.

Characteristic to Crichton's novels (The Andromeda Strain and Next come to mind) the conflict and shocking turn of events culminate in a drastically flat ending. However, the thrill in this novel is not quite the edge-of-my-seat feeling I've come to know and love from Crichton and fails to build to that halt of an ending.

I thought this book was excellent. Well-paced, well-researched, great plot, and then it got to the end and it undid in the last 2 or 3 pages all of great work done before. I'm still shaking my head at how it almost felt like the author said to someone "okay, I'm tired, just write whatever to finish the book"
