This 1990 Jim Henson film is pretty true to the Roald Dahl children's novel by the same name, with lines seemingly lifted from the pages of the book. The ending is different -- but I like it better. I LOVED the grandma, and Luke as a mouse was so adorable! Stars well-known today are here and of course considerably younger -- Anjelica Huston, Rowan Atkinson, Brenda Blethyn, Bill Paterson, Michael Palin, and Jim Carter as the head of the hotel kitchen. Lots of smoke and special effects and burping should make this timeless movie appealing to kids even some 30 years later.

1990 adaptation of Roald Dahl's novel. Dahl and the filmmakers apparently clashed over the film. Anjelica Huston is great as the head witch and you'll recognize veteran British characters actors in the supporting roles: Rowan Atkinson, Brenda Blethyn, Jane Horrocks, and Jim "Downtown Abbey" Carter. Too bad the kid is kinda annoying. Directed by Nicolas Roeg, known for decidedly non-kiddie fare like "The Man Who Fell to Earth" and "Walkabout," with visual/puppet effects by Jim Henson and co. Though a kid's movie, it's got some scary moments.

A wonderful cautionary tale for children about the wiles of witches---although, its mildly adult situations make this more a film for grownups than for children.
Anjelica Huston is thoroughly convincing as the Grand High Witch. She is both sensual and sinister at the same time.
Mai Elisabeth Zetterling plays the grandmother of the protagonist. She is perfect as the teller of dark tales as she enjoys her cigars and helps her grandson recognize witches and avoid their evil schemes.
Rowan Atkinson, in his role as hotel manager Mr. Stringer, lends comic relief as the story develops in the Excelsior Hotel in Cornwall by the beach.
This is one of my must-watch films every fall as Halloween approaches.

Taking a journey back to my childhood to share with my son some of my childhood favorites has been a lovely gift. Reawakened to the beauty of family, dreams, community, and openheartedness!

I just LOVE this movie!!! Angelica Houston plays a marvelous head witch. It's more Disney than scary but there are a couple of parts that very small children might find scary. Jim Henson's puppetry is featured in this movie and they are really well done!
