I, Tonya is a 2017 dark comedy about the life of Tonya Harding. The film was written by Steven Rogers and directed by Craig Gillespie.

I, Tonya stars Margot Robbie as Tonya Harding, Sebastian Stan as Jeff Gillooly, Allison Janney as Tonya's Mother, Julianne Nicholson as the coach, Caitlin Carver as Nancy Kerrigan, Paul Walter Hauser as the bodyguard and Ricky Russert as Shane Stant (the man hired to harm Nancy Kerrigan).

I,Tonya is the story of the life of Tonya Harding who worked her entire life to be in the Winter Olympics for figure skating. When she was four years old her Mother, LaVona Golden, forced Tonya to skate and was very abusive towards her daughter. By the time Tonya is a teen she is one of the best figure skaters in the United States.

By age 18 she meets Jeff Gillooly and they get married. Tonya has a very hard time because she has a very rough exterior and that along with her homemade costumes and choice of music is deemed not suitable for a figure skating champion. The problems begin with her husband when he becomes abusive as well. Tonya ends up blaming her Mother for all of the abuse. As for Tonya's skating she was best known for completing two triple axels in competition. During the 1992 Winter Olympics Tonya misses her landing on a triple axel and lands up finishing fourth. It is Tonya's trainer that convinces her to try again in the 1994 Winter Olympics. At this point in her life she is working as a waitress. At a National Competition in 1993 Sean Eckhardt (Tonya's bodyguard and Jeff's friend) hits Tonya's competitor, Nancy Kerrigan in the knee with a baton. Nancy Kerrigan cannot compete. An amazing performance by Allison Janney as Tonya's Mother.

In the aftermath, Tonya is haunted by the press, publicity and law enforcement after the attack on Nancy Kerrigan. How did Tonya's skating career go after, watch I, Tonya to find out.

This film grossed $54 million dollars at the box office.

This movie is rated R. Lots of profanity.

Rating 10/10

I enjoyed this movie more than I expected to, especially knowing nothing about the original story as it played out historically. I was definitely taken aback by the frequent fourth-wall breaks, which seems to be a hallmark of Margot Robbie movies. However Robbie once again gave a great performance as a woman on the edge. No one does crazy eyes like her. I though the mom (Janney) was chilling, really good stuff even if her character was despicable. This is one of those movies where you aren't supposed to feel sorry or even like any of the characters - they are all pretty much the worst. Decent footage of the figure skating, I wish they had zoomed out more to see more of the routines, but ultimately it was focused on the drama of Harding's life.

I knew the basics of the Harding/Kerrigan event, but did not know Harding's backstory. Tough girl who had a hard life - you just know it's going to end badly. If you can't stand the grittiness of the abuse and bad language, this story isn't for you. It was better than I expected and well acted

If this film is to be believed, Tonya's world is full of foul-mouthed people, mean tempers and trashy talking.
An abusive husband with nincompoop friends who combined their considerable idiocy to ruin her skating career ( though she seemed perfectly capable of self-destruction ).
Not a movie you can feel warm and dreamy about. Maybe it's supposed to be a comedic take on the life of a woman thrown into the dumpster of life.
Hard to know or care.

Don't feel sorry for Tonya. The Media provided her with more fame/notoriety than she ever would have received in any other field of endeavour. Landing a triple jump did not help her because she clearly lacked any imagination; another woman would have understood that a husband like Gilooly was only going to drag her down into oblivion. Tonya, Gilooly and the incredible idiot Shawn--who can't stop bragging that he's a counterterrorism expert, completely absurd--are condemned to a hell of their own making. All the actors do well; Sebastian Stan is really menacing as the out of control husband.

If I could give this film zero stars I would because 1/2 seems way too generous. Had I known this was a 'documentary-style' film I probably would have turned it off a lot sooner than I did but I'd been curious about it since its release. The swearing (and OMG, it was like every other word) was a huge turn off and it wasn't hard to see why this is Rated R, but the acting (or lack of it) was atrocious... all of it. I was reminded yet again why I cannot stand Allison Janney and although if her role was true to the real life person, she did an excellent job because I wanted to smack her so hard. The woman who portrayed Tonya Harding looked WAY too old for the role and didn't look at ALL like Tonya. In fact she made Tonya look like a beauty queen. She couldn't act her way out of a paper bag, either. I ended up fast-forwarding through most of it but I was curious to see how they would handle the Nancy Kerrigan scandal. I shouldn't have been surprised that it too was glossed over. Ugh, I wish I could get back the hour or so that I spent watching this movie and I hate that I wasted a rental on it. How this film is praised so much and received so many awards and recognition is way beyond me. Horrible, horrible movie. Enough said?

Fabulous acting by Allison Janney (as Tonya's mother) and also Margot Robbie (as Tonya), but really all the acting was great. Tonya's mother was a monster in a way, but you could understand her motivation. The story is a perfect example of how people do the best they can based on how they are brought up.
I've averaged my rating to a 4; I'd give the movie a 3 and the acting a 5.

Quotes from mom:
Tonya's my 5th child from husband number 4. She was always a handful. And I guess we spoiled her. Which is a goddamned hat trick when you haven't got shit your entire life. Still, I drove her to competitions, practices. I sewed her all her costumes. But to her, her mother's a monster. Generally people either love Tonya or are... not big fans.
Just like people either love America or are not big fans. Tonya was totally American.
===
They want a wholesome American family? ... Well. It's not gonna be easy.. But I could pull that outta my ass.
===
I like your hair pulled back like that. You look young.
-I'm 23, mom.
===
I'm not here to tell you I told you so. I'm not..
-Why are you here? What do you want?
I want you to know... I don't know. That I am on your side.

I'm trying to skate and I keep... falling in front of everyone. While... Nancy gets her own private rink where someone catches her before she falls.
===
You're a taker. Every cent I made went to your skating and you took it. What do you want?
-Jesus!
Well this was a stupid fxcking idea..
-Was anything I ever did good enough for you?
You were soft.
- At three?
I made you a fighter. You never had a chance...
-You fxcked with my head. You made me think I could skate best when my life was shxt. And now my life is shzt. You made that fzcking real for me. I don't want that!
You would've picked it in a heartbeat! You should be thanking me. Not blaming me.
-Did you...? I mean when I was a kid, did you ever love me? Or anything?
You think Sonia Henie's mother loved her? Poor fzckin' you. I didn't stay home making apple brown Bettys. No, I made you a champion! Knowing you'd hate me for it. That's the sacrifice a mother makes. I wish I had a mother like me. Instead of nice. Nice gets you shzt.

But there's no smoking on the ice.

I hit her one time, with a hairbrush.

I don't know, Tonnie. I would never be with someone who fzckin' hit me.
- You hit dad.
That's different.
===
You skated like a graceless bull dyke! I was embarrassed for you.

Your Honor. I don't have an education. All I know is skating. That's all I know. And I.. I'm no one... If I can't skate... I'm not... I mean, I'm not some monster. I just... I'm trying to do the best in what I know how to. ... please. Please! Just send me to jail and then I can still skate! Just send me to jail and then I can still skate...!

The people still wanted to see me. So I became a lady boxer. I mean, why not? Violence was always what I knew anyway. America, you know... They want someone to love... but they want someone to hate. And they want it easy. But what's easy? And the haters always say, Tonya Tell the truth. But there's no such thing as truth. I mean it's bullshxt. Everyone has their own truth.
