absolutely wicked female empowerment story. perfect Gothic Romance dancing on the edge of Horror, this is the film that should have won the Oscar, not the horribly ridiculous "shape of water."

I was swept away by this, to another place and another time. Yet I was so very uncomfortable watching this man's behavior. It is difficult viewing.
I found this while looking for more of Lesley Manville. Once again, she is a marvelous actor.

I don’t enjoy it, the movie is slow, predictable and pointless. It is neither thrilling, exciting, mysterious, humorous, scientific, inspiring, nor romantic. I don’t like the plot, acting and characters, too much eccentricity and insecurity. There’s nothing special with the cinematography.

Interesting story with a twist even though it plods along. Not sorry I watched it.

Daniel Day-Lewis plays a very eccentric dress maker here. The acting by all is amazing and the story is so very original. I liked it.

Please read this review after you have watched the movie. I loved the dresses, houses movie is set in, acting, music, and could even understand Woodcock. BUT, I googled mushroom poisoning and it causes organ failure. I thought he would die and the sister would hang for it because inevitably someone who works in the house overheard their morning argument. After I watched it I thought, "they deserve each other". It was different but I have no regrets.

Deliciously twisted.

I'm with Joe. What absolute drivel - a waste of good actors. The Writers' Guild should cancel the membership and fine the author of this nonsense.

Long insufferable pointless and bloody senseless to boot. Now listen, you tell a story by presenting a beginning a middle and an end; in which everything adds up. Not this inchoate nonsense with august pretence to serious art. This movie is garbage

This film makes being odd, OCD and self-absorbed seem ok. Alma seems to go through several personality changes: Simple girl, modeling in beautiful clothes and a jealous wife. I’ve seen most of Daniel Day Lewis body of work and do believe he is an incredible actor. But for him to want to retire from acting on this film seems a tragedy.

Many interesting quotes from the film have been posted in IMDb ... thanks to the contributors. However, the film left out some good stuff from the extras that are as memorable:

From a deleted scene:

I never really like myself. I thought my shoulders were too wide. My neck was skinny like a girl. And I have no breasts. Except my hips are large than needed. My arms strong. But in his work, I became perfect. I feel just right. May be that’s how all women feel in his clothes.

Alma wears a claret-colored hostess ensemble with a wool jersey blouse and a matching silk veil skirt trimmed with Alençon lace.

The tailored jacket featuring unique shoulder details is trimmed with charcoal gray plassementerie, and is paired with a romantic full skirt, the unique touch of a Cavaliers Cape lined in crimson silk, custom feathered hat and Cavalier-style embroidered kid leather gloves completes the look.
Ellie wears a daytime ensemble of moss green iridescent wool with a full-length coat and pencil-slim skirt, paired with a vibrant floral silk lining and matching print silk blouse. The outfit is finished with a matching green hat in a fine straw, an exclusive house of Woodcock sting-gray design.
Make way for Bonnie, she wears an evening gown of emerald green silk taffeta. The skirt held away from the hips with inverted tucks. The wonderful bodice is of black ribbon lace with a décolletage for displaying one’s favorite jewels.

Ellie wears a spring suit in a soft fog-colored wool in a subtle plaid, paired with a built-in waistcoat of straw colored lightweight herringbone wool. The lines of the cleverly cut jacket continue into the lines of the pencil-slim skirt.
And now it’s the turn of Alma who wears a renaissance inspired gala gown with matching evening cape rendered in smoked colored silk velvet with golden Hurd taffeta skirt and cape lining. The bodice' s front slashing details is set off with strings of graduated sead pearls and crystal accents.
Ingrid wears a dinner ensemble suitable for casual dinners with friends or first nights out on a tropical cruise. A romantic silk organza blouse and silk taffeta skirt, both in soft azure blue, are contrasted with black wool jersey bodice, shawl, belt and handbag. The result was an inevitable loveliness from the House of Woodcock.
