I found it fun (even though I had to read subtitles, no french here). Ophuls did a great job. Darrieux was 'irresistible' as another commenter said. After watching the whole thing I thought I would try the commentary version to see if I could get anymore out of it by listening to a professional opinion, but quickly found the commentary detracted from the enjoyment - too dry and analytical. If only some great filmmaker and cast would redo this film in english. Many people just shy away from subtitles and miss out on great films.

There is nothing I can add that hasn't been expressed already and better over the more than 60 years since this film was made. I personally think that everyone else learned to make films from watching French films.

This is just a great stylish escape film--a foreign b/w made in the 1950s, with romance and a bit of humor about an unhappily married countess that looks unhappily overstuffed with abundant fancies--except at the ball. Those disgusting furs, uugh.

The author of the book on which the movie is based, in an interview included on the disk, calls the movie "boring" and notes that it uses little more than the title of the book,

Darrieux, De Sica and Boyer are all wonderful in this adaptation of Vilmorin's novel. Watch the camera movement and tell me if any of the talents working in film today are capable of this.

My interest in Stanley Kubrick and Paul Thomas Anderson's work brought me to Max Ophuls, whom both directors have credited with being a primary influence on the way they move the camera. Ophuls is considered a master of the "long tracking shot"; amazing when you consider the bulkiness of film cameras during his time. This Criterion edition includes an introduction by Anderson himself. Great study for film students and wannabe film students alike. Other special features: insightful (and slightly pretentious) commentary track by two film scholars from a largely feminist perspective; various interviews with Ophul's colleagues; and a visual breakdown of Ophul's shooting/editing style.

A showpiece for the irresistible Danielle Darrieux. Charles Boyer's character is an interesting study in high-minded husbandly forebearance, and its limits.

Max Ophuls, what more is there to say? Other great films of his are: La Ronde and Letter from an Unknown Woman. The latter film is just great, imho.
