Seven-year-old Chloe lives in both fear under her father's protective and paranoid control, and fascination of the outside world, where Abnormals create a constant threat, or so she believes. When a mysterious stranger offers her a glimpse of what's really happening outside, Chloe soon finds that while the truth isn't so simple, the danger is very real.

Wanted to like it; didn't. A dragged-out plod through the recent mutant superhero fad that never really got going or held interest.

The film is condescending out of the blocks with what appears to be an insane broken family situation that is too unbelievable. That wasn't a given however, so it spiked my curiosity for the first 15min but quickly dissolved into a puddle of who cares. I saw what was going on before it happened, the prediction gap increasing as time marched on. By the last half hour I was ready to FFWD to the final scene and see if I was correct; I kept going with my vested-interest fallacy in overdrive, but no surprises. In one scene, it appeared they had to do some re-shoots after sets were demolished, maybe responding to nonsensical previews.

Imagine the X-Men without character familiarity, heroism, altruism, money, tech toys, a threat, or any reason to care other than some personal oppression and fear that was barely touched on until I had already started checking the time. I'm sure the elevator pitch was all X-men, but you can only do so much with a condemned house, an old van, and a few rented police uniforms. It might have been a statement against state control or police brutality, but it lacked much stating.

I rented this movie not knowing what it was about and was pleasantly surprised! There's a nice twist in the middle and surprises around every corner. A different take on the superhero "us vs them" idea.

This DVD movie "FREAKS" was introduced to Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2018 (and) released to U.S. on September 13, 2019.
At first. I thought this was some HORROR movie. BUT "NO" > this is a Sci-Fi (science fiction) movie about an AWESOME 7-year-old child actress (Lexy Kolker) as Chloe.
There are TONS of SPECIAL EFFECTS throughout 1hr 45minute DVD movie.
Chloe is a child who makes up constant telepathic dreams of having a difficult time losing both her Mom & Dad at a early age. As explained in the Bonus Features from a wonderful director "Adam Stein", HE DID NOT TRY TO PRESSURE any Actors/Actresses, to Act Dramatically different, then normal.
THIS IS "NOT A MOVIE CHILDREN SHOULD SEE". In this movie (which is purposely RATED R),
everything is madeup.
Actors/"child"-adult Actresses do use guns and get shot. There are an ENORMOUS amount of SWEAR WORDS from BOTH child and adults in this movie; but an ADULT, I can Comprehend the Difference.
This movie "FREAKS" did not make alot of money at box office $338,576 (as per wikipedia), most likely because it was a SHORT 105minutes Movie; but [In My Opinion], I still enjoyed some parts of this movie towards the end (seeing the underground caverns where the experminents on the (ABNORMAL _i.e. Freaks) was occuring. >> [BUT did not LIKE MIDDLE OF MOVIE when Chloe telepath dream, showed all her friends , calling Chloe a "FREAK" and making-fun-of-her]
WHILE WATCHING the Bonus Features::
LEXY KOLKER did know Right (from) Wrong [because Adult Actress & Director; were in the same room, during recording/production]

You know that feeling you get when you walk into the theater just a biiit late, but the movie's already started to roll? That's how I felt during the opening minutes of Freaks, as I had many questions, with few answers being given. Eventually, viewers discover in a seemingly not-too-distant future (or a world parallel to our own), some in the population are blessed/cursed with varying extraordinary abilities. All in all, not the best, but definitely not the worst version of this story. I thought the pacing & set work of the first 15-20 minutes evoked the wonderful, "City of Lost Children," & Hirsch has an absolute GEM of a line during the movie's climactic stand-off.

This one has a super high score on Rotten Tomatoes but it didn't really meet my expectations. I found the story a little boring and repetitive but it was a an interesting premise.

There is no reason to compare this to the doesnt pretend to be the next marvel franchise..after all, x-men type movies have not been very good as whole and those roots are no different then spacemen and aliens with powers humans dont understand..just like in the 50's..
Anyways, this looks budget sci fi ne er once looked or felt lol budget. It was e erythi g good that companies su h ad IFC try to do and that is to bring good and thoughtful films on a much smaller budget while concentrating on the story to those who enjoy taking a chance at finding hidden gems. This is similar to how I felt when I viewed without any prior knowledge the mo ie District basically surprised me at how e grossing it was and kept me entertained. Having Bruce Dern in a major role just gave it that mu h more clout. The man can act his butt off and has done so for over 50 years yet still brings his best efforts..a true professional..
Good story, good tension, good pace, good acting, good ending..or was it.?
Hope , if you try this movie out, you enjoy it as much as I did.

Bad attempt at an X-men flick. The acting was also poor as well as the directing. With all that money he had why did he not fix up the shack or at least purchase some real decent heavy curtains instead of using duct tape like he did? If it was so he did not expose him then why did he not have a neighbour run the errand for them? There was so many holes in the story for me to enjoy it. My feeling this was just a B-movie.

Like X-Men meets 10 Cloverfield Lane. I really enjoyed how the story took its time to roll out - a good mixture of suspense and sci-fi!

A writer/director team trying way too hard to come up with something and it's just contrived nonsense.

Surprised that there is not a single quote in IMDb as of this morning. Here is a good one:

Did your Dad ever tell you the story of the unicorns? Well, in a forest very nearby there was a whole big family of unicorns. Then one night a pack of snarling wolves came into the forest and grabbed the Mommy unicorn and took her away. And the Daddy unicorn who had a weapon right here chose not to use it. He wanted to hide. He wanted to be a peaceful unicorn.
***Spoiler Alert***
Well, the next night the wolves came back and they ate the Daddy unicorn.
-Then what happened?
The baby? She's left alone. Doesn't know what to do. She knows that she's supposed to hide because that's what the Dad did. And so she thought if I do that then I can live peacefully in the forest. But you know what happened? There are no more fucking unicorns.
