Surprisingly great horror thriller. Gets straight to the point with it's personal mix of Alien, the Abyss, and Lovecraft. Very fun.

Good sets and special effects in the opening, but wooden acting and a terrible, predictable script lifted from similar, better done movies. Yawn. I had to skip forward a lot.

Very average horror/thriller film. Worth a watch if nothing else is available but don’t go out of your way. Although, I always like Kristen Stewart and I still think she did a good job here with very limited material. And trust me, the (pretty minor) spoiler from the plot description (which is not explained at all in the movie, so must be some sort of insider joke, and really doesn’t matter to the plot) would not be harmed by anything man-made!

Murky water..murky camera.. m.j urky story stolen from alien and others makes this a murky and quite boring film..huge disappointment and complete waste of time..honestly even on bluray this film is barely able to be watched..its one thing to leave things up to viewer its another to make it so frustratingly bland and murky that it's a chore to TRY to feel part of..

I liked this movie. YES, it follows Alien theme. Kristen Stewart was fun to watch, talented actress. Good scary predictable movie with a few few sarcastic scenes along the way.

Seriously--watch this with the whole family or a group of sci-fi fans if possible. The best thing about the movie is shouting out which movie each scene was stolen from! Great fun if you talk through movies and don't mind backing up to replay scenes. Not one minute of original screen play--but gosh what a great family activity!

This is a straightforward modern Alien would-be suspenseful sci-fi monster movie. I actually like it, overall, despite the two-star rating. It's not like this is the product of masterful film-making. It's a pretty simple and run-of-the-mill movie. The plot is generic and obvious. The writing does not demand much from the performers, and the performers recite the lines as written. The soundtrack and the editing are straightforward, as well.
Though the movie does not really take its time in slow-burn fashion to ratchet up the tension overall (see: "Alien"), it does generate tension in a fun and basically effective way at a few fun moments throughout the film. The setting is alright. The monster effects are cool.
I think, as much as anything, what this film does well is reproduce some of the claustrophobic sensations from Alien, with a spot-on Lovecraftian deep-sea monster that's pretty present from about a third of the way into the movie.
Again: the plot is barebones. The characters are just faces to go through the motions. Other than what I mentioned above, one other thing that's pretty fun is a non-stop comic relief character who does his thing through about the two-thirds mark.
The two star rating is simply reflecting this is not approaching nomination for awards. It's a simple and straightforward sci-fi monster flick. In that regard, the movie does what it wants to in a pretty good and certainly fun and watchable way.

THE ASPCA (ATLANTEAN SOCIETY for the PREVENTION of CRUELTY to ANIMALS) ASSURES NO KRAKENS WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS FILM.... or
SOMEBODY GET SOUTH PARK'S LAWYERS ON THE PHONE, FAST!!
Love me some Vincent Cassel; he's always a fantastic heel, even here as the team leader of the deep sea drilling expedition. TJ Miller does a fine Bill Paxton ("GAME OVER MAN") and it paves the way for Stewart to try on Ripley, even in a subdued form. Didn't care for the pacing, and the reveal was too late to be anything but a relief.
Someone mentioned THE ABYSS, so add; THE MEG, DEEP RISING, and SPHERE, throw in DEEP BLUE SEA, and any of the JAWS films to surface slowly... you might find the series SURFACE pushing the limit, but it had it's fine points too...
