"Dream a little, Kulu, this world now sings a most beautiful song of you." This beautiful bedtime poem, written by acclaimed Inuit throat singer Celina Kalluk, describes the gifts given to a newborn baby by all the animals of the Arctic. Lyrically and tenderly told by a mother speaking to her own little Kulu; an Inuktitut term of endearment often bestowed upon babies and young children, this visually stunning book is infused with the traditional Inuit values of love and respect for the land and its animal inhabitants. A perfect gift for new parents.

Little ones are likely to be comforted and captivated by this book set in the world of the first peoples of the Arctic. Soft and warm may not be the first words to come to mind when thinking of this northernmost part of Earth, but they are the perfect words to describe Sweetest Kulu written by acclaimed Inuit throat singer Celina Kalluk. In it, newborn baby Kulu is given gifts and blessings from the arctic animals around them : the Arctic Hare shows love, the Arctic Char gives tenderness, the Caribou bestows patience, and the Polar Bear offers gentleness and respect for all animals. Lastly, the Land itself gives a gift: “Never be lazy, beloved Kulu, because your Land is a place of bright ideas.” Alexandria Neonakis illustrations are sweet and comforting and make the experience of reading this book that much more cozy. One of my favorite things about this book is the patterns of repetition are soothingly predictable and the text itself is quietly empowering.

The illustrated pages are stunningly beautiful. I flipped through them over and over. The story is very sweet although the text was sometimes a bit awkward. Don't let that stop you from trying out this lovely tale an Inuit mother shares with her child, about the natural world around them.

In this charming picture book, an unnamed mother speaks lovingly to her newborn. She tells him about the day he was born, and how all of the Arctic came to greet him. As they visit, the animals, and the land itself, endows little Kulu with a set of qualities; tenderness from Arctic Char, patience and a sense of direction from Caribou... each spread features a different entity and their gift. This sense of love and well-wishing is conveyed through both word and art. All the illustrations have soft, coloured linework, designs that emphasize the gentle, cuddly side of the animals and baby, and a beautiful dreamlike palette. Sweetest Kulu is a heartfelt lullaby, looks phenomenal, and, it nurtures the Inuit value of respect for nature. Absolutely recommended for all little ones and their guardians.

This book is so beautiful! I bought it for my six-month-old and he loved looking at it as well as hearing the rhythm of the poem. It's about an Inuit child who learns life lessons from nature and the animals around him. I recommend it for everyone, especially Canadians!
