From the New York Times-bestselling author of The Excellent Lombard's and A Map of the World, this is "an extraordinary story of a family's disintegration [that] will be compared to Jane Smiley's A Thousand Acres" (People). It follows Ruth Grey, a young woman in a tiny Illinois farm town, who has lost her father to World War II, and constantly faces her unhappy mother's wrath-when she isn't being ignored in favor of her math-prodigy brother. As Ruth navigates her lonely life, she strives to find happiness and pleasure where she can, but the world may conspire to defeat her.

The second book I've read from this author. Hopefully her life is not as disturbing as her tales. Even so the books are well written and difficult to put down.

At first I enjoyed this book...and then it dragged on and on! I ended up skipping ahead looking for something to change but it never did. Boring!

Ruth is true grit -- a child woman of the American Midwest whose relationship with her family and friends shines with pathos and humour. Her gentle yet resilient spirit enables her to bear deep emotional pain and still have the gumption to look ahead.

While I enjoyed this story and the writing skills of the author, I had a hard time with the brutality and emotional sadness. The cruel life she had to life made me very depressed. I wouldn't suggest reading this book in the winter when it's already hard to be cheerful.

The twist at the end of this book was so sad and unexpected. I was shocked!! The main character, Ruth, always seems to be on the edge of hard times but is a strong willed and compassionate person. What happens in the end seems so wrong to happen to her yet she still is able to put forth a positive attitude. A great read, I definitely recommend it!
