Having experiences, as hobbyist, since 1978 with microprocessors, micro computers and electronic circuits, I still find this book quite good in covering many aspects of selecting, construction and programming micro-controller based projects. One high mark about this book and "Robot Builder's Bonanza, 4th Edition", the author posts many updates, useful tips, source code samples, additional projects related to the book on a web site. They are all free to download!

Due to its broad coverage, definitely there is no room to go in great depth on every topics, but this book is definitely an excellent reference for beginners and hobbyists.
