This is the second book featuring Aloysius Archer. I was not that impressed by the first one, "A good Deed," but this one was better. I'm not sure I liked all the violence but the repartee and one-liners were good. There is an interesting plot. Archer leaves Poca City and heads out West to California. He stops en-route at Reno and has some luck at the tables. This helps him find not only a travel companion - a good-looking, smart, talented woman but also a nifty car. When they reach Bay Town California Archer and Callahan find jobs but Archer's first case leads to murders and violence. The ending is surprising and well worth a read.

A GAMBLING MAN is set in the late 1940s and reintroduces Archer (from ONE GOOD DEED) in a new adventure for the WW II veteran and ex-con. I love the time setting and his desire to do the right thing and make a career of becoming a private investigator. It was a different era, but I liked the story a lot. It is different from his novels set in modern times. No spoilers from me. Great read. Enjoy!

This was only an Ok book. Definitely not as good as his past novels. Not very exciting and the book seemed to just drag on. Not smart or entertaining dialogue. I struggled to get to the end.

I loved One Good Deed and this book continues Archers story. This is a film noir in book form. The 1950's are fun to remember seeing Reno and California in the beginning of their boom. The female characters are particularly fascinating and Liberty won my heart. An all-around good read.

Really liked this book. Took you back to the days of the old fashioned PI - rooms with smoke and lots of booze. Reminder of the 50's movies filled with femme fatales, snazzy cars and the tough guys. Could see Robert Mitchum and Clark Gable sitting at the bars with Lauren Bacall smoking at their sides.

OMG.....soooooo boorrring. Somebody shoot me!

The ability to place a hold on ordered books is excellent. The extensive (more) explanation of the book should help some folks grasp better whether this book is for them, thus freeing up some books from getting tied up by "look-seers". Just a thought.
