First, the cons: 1.) Dean Stockwell (Walt) and his wife (Anne) were ridiculously forgiving of their brother's selfish disappearing act, resulting in their rearing of *his* child for four years. 2.) The actual ages of the actors/estranged parents in 1984: Stanton (Travis)---58; and Kinski (Jane)---23. Sorry, folks. That was a preposterous pairing. 3.) Travis was incredibly ungrateful to his brother and his wife, and his kidnapping of what I would consider legally their son is why "Amber Alerts" exist today. That was just cruel, and wrong. Now the pros: A very engaging strange story from Sam Shepard, beautifully coupled with Ry Cooder's acoustic slide guitar score -- truly one of the best scores I've enjoyed of late. (Evidently the man influenced Duane Allman!) Ignoring the infuriating irresponsible parenting, and my picking apart at the above issues, the film is well worth the trip.
