Beautifully shot and well acted, the movie is ultimately, rather empty, however. The story needed an arc, which was lacking. The first scene includes discovery of Corporal John McBurney in the woods by a schoolgirl. He is taken back to the girls school where he is fawned over by all the lovely well-dressed girls whose training in how to be proper young women is challenged by his seductive charm. But what was life like at the school prior to his entry into it? If we knew that, we might get a better understanding of why, for example, Edwina (Kirsten Dunst) takes the actions that she does.
