Raise anti-racist kids: learn about racism and race

A series of terrible events launched racism into the face of millions in late May of 2020. Media was covering murders by police and citizens, profilings, and jailing that were specifically targeting the Black American community. This is not news to them, but was to the many Americans who are finally starting to wake up to this harsh reality millions of African-Americans face daily, because of the color of their skin. It is time to change the ways we talk about race with children, and even begin talking about it with them sooner. Yes, addressing privilege is uncomfortable, but we can no longer afford to put off the conversations. Learning about race and racism may even look different than how it was taught to you. At SFPL, we believe Black Lives Matter, and hope this list will help adult caregivers and educators connect with some great literature to begin this journey of change and re-education. This list was created during a time of Shelter in Place during the COVID-19 epidemic, we tried to accumulate as many ebooks as possible for online access while libraries are closed, but please note that some items are not yet available in eBook format. But we will try our hardest to keep this list growing and relevant as new books and authors get published.
