This film is a biopic of Okakura Tenshin, who is considered the father of modern Japanese art. Tenshin contributed greatly to the preservation and development of Japanese aesthetics and traditional Japanese art amid a growing focus on new values--Western culture, and Western aesthetics--that rose during turmoil of the Meiji Restoration. This film depicts Tenshin's feverish devotion and his relationships with his disciples like Yokoyama Taikan and others.

This slapstick drama that begins when Sakurai replaced the locker key of the bathhouse and switches lives with the wealthy man, will entertain the audience from start to finish.

ウィキペディアによるところ, この忠臣蔵は、「戦後映画化された『忠臣蔵』の中で最も浪花節的かつ講談調で娯楽性が高く、人気の高い作品でリアリティよりも虚構の伝説性を重んじる風潮がまだ残っていて『忠臣蔵』の初心者が大枠を掴むのに適していると言われている。」そう言った訳で私はこの作品を選びました。しかし、日本語が江戸時代に使われていたものなのか、恥ずかしながら英語の字幕を読まなければ会話が理解出来ませんでした。主君に忠誠を誓い自らの命を懸けたその姿に、改めて時の流れと価値観の変化、それと同時に潔しさを感じてしまいました。
According to Wikipedia, "Among several film versions of 'Chushingura' (47 Ronin) that were created after the World War II, this particular 'Chushingura' emphasizes highly entertaining, legendary aspects rather than depicting a true historical event. It is said that this 'Chushingura' is suitable for beginners to grasp the historical outline." I chose this film because of the above description in Wikipedia. However, the dialogue in this film is archaic and could have been used during the Edo period. I could not understand the conversation without reading the English subtitles. The scenes of swearing loyalty to the lord and taking one's own life made me feel the passage of time and changes in values, and at the same time enjoy the sheer purity of his attitude.

I remember watching the political unrest and mass university-student uprisings in 1960s on TV in Japan. These
student uprisings gave birth to the far-left group, United Red Army. This docudrama incorporates real news footage from events like the Yodo Hijacking incident and Asama Sanso incident. The film also depicts torture and humiliation of "deviant" members of the Army. I'm surprised that the United Red Army was advocating for an idea that was so unrealistic.

The film depicts an ordinary, working-class, downtown family. The naïve husband invites a stranger not only into their business but also into their house. Then the stranger gradually starts showing his true motives. The film reveals several typical issues of Japanese society such as increasing divorce rate, fear and distrust to foreigners (xenophobia), illegal overstay by foreign visitors. It is a black comedy.

From Koji Fukada, the same director of 2009's Hospitalité (歓待) comes this new black comedy, Harmonium. Its Japanese title 淵に立つ (Fuchi ni tatsu) means standing on the edge. As the Japanese title indicates, the audience will be emotionally pushed to the edge, and will be constantly holding their breath anticipating what will happen next. According to Wikipedia, it was intended as a companion piece to the black comedy, Hospitalité.
The relationship between husband and wife and the change in language they use is something to pay attention to. I would categorize this movie as a thriller.

This movie features Tadanobu Asano, from Harmonium, as protagonist, Hiroshi Takagi. The movie can seem slow and dull at times, but it is actually a hypnotic and visually artistic movie. Hiroshi, his dead girlfriend, and a brilliant medical student who is in love with Hiroshi weave a poetic story of death and living. It is a bizarre film. The film is classified R: (18+) Restricted.
