Tattoos
the Untold Story of a Modern Art
Created in conjunction with SFPL's exhibit, Living Tattoo Traditions: American Irezumi and Beyond (October 2, 2025 – March 1, 2026, Jewett Gallery, Lower Level, Main Library), this curated selection explores tattooing as an evolving art form and personal practice. These books highlight the cultural, historical and social dimensions of tattooing across time and geography—from Japanese irezumi to American flash, prison ink, queer tattoo movements and beyond. Together, they reflect how tattoos can mark identity, memory, resistance and belonging—offering readers a deeper appreciation of the inked stories we carry.
